I want to pool everyone's knowledge together on the front row to help train new players. What do you think are the most essential skills? The more views we have the better.

Ranking the skills in order, my view is:
Stamina
Technique
Strength
Defence
Attack
Handling (apart from Hooker - this becomes the second most important skill)
Agility
Speed
Jumping
Kicking

What have I got wrong in your opinion?

For the props, I'd probably put strength slightly > technique, hookers would have handling > technique > strength.  I'd also put speed above agility - whoever heard of a prop dodging anything?  But speed to the breakdown could be handy.

I rank agility higher in BR it helps rucking mauls and driving plays for forwards but really I prefer forwards with equal amounts of both

I go Prop: stamina -> strength -> tech -> handling -> attack/defense -> speed
Hooker: stamina -> tech -> handling -> strength, attack/defense -> speed

What do you all think of height and weight for the front row?

Is heavier better?

I'm sure I read once that a short front row has an advantage against taller opposition. Does everyone agree with this? I've seen some people look for front rowers at 190cm before.

Shorter front rows do have an advantage over taller front rows in the scrum, but (a) it's not much of an advantage and (b) there are no scrums resulting in penalties. That being the case many feel taller props give an advantage lifting jumpers in the lineout and elect for such over the stronger scrum option. Heavier is better, but comes with a penalty to stamina.

I will say as it stands the lineout is an easier area of gain an advantage under the ME, and that the lineout is far more important in determining a game too (especially once teams improve in standard and handling errors drop in number), but I wouldn't say people are wrong to want a shorter front row. Not least as you'd also have to look at how taller players manage in open play. There isn't a right or wrong entirely in this, it'll depend on a squad as is, where a manager wants to take it, what size players are coming through the YA, who they're training
